  • 1953: The East German government announces a currency reform in an attempt to stabilize its struggling economy. This move further heightened tensions with West Germany during the Cold War.
  • 1959: The Dominican Republic holds its first free elections in 36 years, marking a step towards democracy after decades of dictatorship. Juan Bosch is elected president.
  • 1963: Goldfinger, the third James Bond film starring Sean Connery, premieres in London. This movie establishes many of the iconic elements associated with the Bond franchise.
  • 1968: The North Vietnamese army and Viet Cong launch the Tet Offensive, a surprise attack on numerous South Vietnamese cities and towns, marking a turning point in the Vietnam War.
  • 1973: The American Indian Movement (AIM) occupies Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in protest of federal government policies towards Native Americans. This occupation lasted for 71 days and raised awareness about Indigenous rights.
