• 1953: The East German government announces a currency reform in an attempt to stabilize its struggling economy. This move further heightened tensions with West Germany during the Cold War.

• 1973: The American Indian Movement (AIM) occupies Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in protest of federal government policies towards Native Americans. This occupation lasted for 71 days and raised awareness about Indigenous rights.
• 1974: The Symbionese Liberation Army, a radical American group, releases a recording of Patricia Hearst, kidnapped heiress, denouncing her family and expressing support for the group's ideology.

• 1986: The 25th Soviet Congress convenes, marking the beginning of Mikhail Gorbachev's leadership as General Secretary of the Communist Party. His policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) would eventually contribute to the fall of the Soviet Union.
• 1989: The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurs off the coast of Alaska, causing one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. The spill had devastating consequences for wildlife and the Alaskan ecosystem.

• 1991: The Gulf War comes to an official end with a ceasefire agreement signed by Iraq and the United States. However, tensions in the region would continue for years to come.
• 1996: The Chechen Republic-Ichkeria declares independence from Russia, sparking the First Chechen War, a brutal conflict that would last for two years.

• 2001: Ariel Sharon is elected Prime Minister of Israel, marking a shift towards a more right-wing government and raising concerns about the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
• 2009: The world mourns the passing of actor and comedian John Updike, known for his acclaimed novels and short stories, including "Rabbit is Rich" and "Rabbit Redux."
