Valentine's Day is said to have originated from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia. This festival, held on February 15th, involved sacrificing animals and whipping women with the hides of the animals to promote fertility. It eventually evolved into a celebration of romance and love.

The heart shape, commonly associated with Valentine's Day, does not actually resemble the human heart. It is believed to have originated from the shape of a plant called silphium, which was used as a form of birth control in ancient times.

The first recorded Valentine's Day card was sent in the 15th century by Charles, Duke of Orleans, when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. He wrote a poem to his wife, expressing his love and affection. This is considered to be the earliest known Valentine's greeting.
