  • The tradition of hanging stockings by the fireplace originated from a popular story about St. Nicholas. According to the tale, St. Nicholas noticed that a poor man couldn't afford dowries for his three daughters. To help them, St. Nicholas secretly dropped bags of gold coins down their chimney, which landed inside their stockings, hung by the fireplace to dry.


  • The song "Jingle Bells" was originally written for Thanksgiving, not Christmas. James Lord Pierpont composed the tune in 1857 as a song to be sung on Thanksgiving Day at his church in Savannah, Georgia. However, due to its catchy melody and cheery lyrics, it became associated with Christmas over time.


  • In Iceland, there is a Christmas tradition of giving books as presents on Christmas Eve. Known as "Jólabókaflóð," which translates to "The Christmas Book Flood," it involves exchanging books with loved ones and spending the evening reading together. This tradition originated during World War II when paper was one of the few items not rationed, leading to books becoming a valuable and cherished gift.
